New Exhibition at The Proud Gallery Camden

Last month The Proud Gallery had a photographic exhibition On the Late Great Bob Marley.It was to mark 30 years since his death. The photographs were taken by Kim Gottlieb- Walker, and had photos of the great man previously not seen before as well as photos of Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and the other Wailers. candid and intimate shots taken between 1975 and 1976. Available in a stunning coffee table book.

This month Proud gallery Camden presents photographs on Jim Morisson and the Doors by the photographers Bobby Klein, Guy Webster and Frank Lisciandro. I cannot wait.

New Recycled Bags

The Accountant and Suzi Q have gone into bag overdrive and have produced some utilty bags for the Live Range made from recycled military jackets, (100% cotton) with a recycled military belt as the shoulder strap. They will be available at Spitalfields from this weekend, only two available at the moment.

After a great response to our Hessian and Linen utility bags. "The Accountant" got in touch with his feminine side and has produced some womens 100% wool bags. Decorated with a heart applique, decorative stitching, and Mother of Pearl flowers, Aaaaaaaaaaaah!

Surianne releases Hestia’s charity single ‘Stronger Than Before’
January 23rd 2011

23rd January Independent singer / songwriter Surianne releases Hestia’s charity single ‘Stronger Than Before’, with all proceeds going to ‘Hestia Housing and Support’. To coincide with the charity’s 40th anniversary, up and coming artist Surianne was selected as Hestia’s single of choice to help raise awareness and funds for the London based charity.

‘Stronger Than Before’ is a moving story about picking up the shattered pieces and rebuilding one’s life. It is an emotional response perhaps provoked by a series of events, both good and bad, experienced by the songwriter. A powerful journey of self discovery and self confidence that through lyrics and music, beautifully describes the process of believing in ones self again.

Hestia currently support in excess of 300 women with experience of domestic violence every year through a range of specialist domestic violence services across six London boroughs, including:

• 10 general refuges for women and their children fleeing domestic abuse
• 1 specialist refuge for women from South and South East Asian Communities,
• 4 floating support services for 72 women with experience of domestic violence
• 1 Independent Domestic Violence Advocate
• Services for children residing in our refuges

Their Vision for Women’s Services is one where every woman can realise her full potential, personally, socially and economically. Hestia recognises the importance of working in partnership with multi- disciplinary teams in relation to the provision of support services including domestic violence. Choosing to work with an independent artist such as Surianne and release ‘Stronger Than Before’ as a charity single will not only provide financial support, but will help to raise the social profile of the charity and its services through music.

All monies from the single download ‘Stronger Than Before’ will proceed to Hestia in specific to their children and family projects - enabling mothers and children affected by domestic violence to rebuild their lives. At 79p per download, every 10 singles downloaded could provide toys and learning materials for children living in Hestia’s domestic violence refuges. Every 20 singles downloaded could provide a basic pack of toiletries and food for a person coming into one of the emergency refuges.

The charity single ‘Stronger Than Before’ will be digitally distributed through various online music portals such as iTunes, Amazon MP3, Walmart, Spotify, MySpace Music and Zune and will only be available initially as a download.

The single has already received airplay in national and international radio stations such as Westside FM (UK), Aculcoradio (UK), Radio Gibraltar (Gibraltar), La Cope (Spain) and featured in national and local press such as The Guardian Waltham Forest (UK), The Gibraltar Magazine, Gibraltar Chronicle, Area (Spain).

I Went to The Proud Gallery in Chelsea at the weekend, with "The Accountant", to see an exhibition on one of the most beautiful men to have walked the planet (my opinion), Muhammad Ali. The photos were taken by the award winning photographer Michael Gaffney who captured The Champ, The Greatest, etc, beautifully, in some never seen before images. Check this exhibition out. It's small but really worth it.

Fordham Music Festival

Touchdown during the wee hours of the morning from the 3 day Fordham music festival - a last minute addition to the Organik Rocka 'Take It To The People' Tour.
All the Rocka crew had duties, so I went all by myself to spread the gospel... and what an adventure!!!

This was my first ever camping festival ( I know I know...)

Fri: nature doing its thing with wind & rain - no joke (try displaying t shirts outside with the wind not having it). All while trying to watch Spencer Kennedy tear up the main stage.

Sat: rain stopped after 5am - hallelejah!! Met cool people & sold tees by day & got totally Dreadzoned by nite!!
Got to take a minute to talk about Dreadzone - heard about them but never seen them ( I know I know ...)
But what a band!!! Bass for days & one of the most charismatic frontmen I have seen in a while - that dude rocks!!! ( but check- the frontman had a cane & had to sit down for most of the time) Special!!

We had a blast!!

Another Positive Artist Gone.

I just found out that Guru died on Monday. I am so shocked. I did not even know was ill with cancer.

His PR company released a statement, which also contained a letter believed to be written by Guru in his last days.

"I have suffered with this illness for over a year," he wrote. "I have exhausted all medical options."

"I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting."

Such a shame he was agreat artist, and did some tunes i really loved. I love his Jazzmatazz project.

Guru, which stood for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal was really gifted, and had some serious lyrics, and i loved his delivery.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

Went to see Cat On A Hot Tin Roof on the weekend, and I really liked it. I wouldn't say i loved the play, but i loved the performances. It is directed by Debby Allen, and I got to see the man I've been dying to see on stage , the great James Earl Jones. What a performance, wow!

As well as Phlylicia Rashad (great performance as Big Mama) The beautiful and talented Sanaa Lathan, and Adrian Lester, who always delivers.Shame it was the last showing last Saturday. If the play returns for another run it is definitly worth seeing.

Recently got back from the first leg of our "Taking it to the People" tour, where Organik Rocka is touring the country doing craft fairs, music festivals etc. Started at the MK Centre where we met some really lovely people, Stall holders and customers alike. We had a great time, selling our T's and playing some cool tunes. We want to say Thanks to all that helped and suported us on our 1st road venture. We plan on doing a few of them this year, we'll keep you posted.

I was hanging out with The Accountant and Kinda Special K in The O.R office late last night, working,listening to music, having a good belly laugh, and they introduced me to the wonderful world of Terence Trent D'arby. I knew a few of his songs but not that many. So I had to "borrow" a couple of albums from them. ;-)

Went home with the tune "She Kissed Me" in my head, and have been playing the albums "Symphony Or Damn" and "Vibrator" all day.

The Bafta award winning multi Talented Noel Clarke (actor, writer, producer, director) has a new movie coming out this May. It's called 4-3-2-1. Written by and co-directed by the man himself.

The movie is set in London and New York and is based around three days in the lives of four girls who are unknowingly connected by a major diamond robbery.

As well as appearing in numerous dramas over the years (He played the character Mickey Smith in Dr Who) he has written episodes of Torchwood and of course wrote Kidulthood and Adulthood ( which I only recently watched can you believe) Both of which he wrote, and directed the latter. It's cool that he is using some of the actors from Kidulthood and Adulthood also, like Adam Deacon and Jacob Anderson. The movie also stars Eve and Emma Roberts.

Check out his interview on Radio 4 on the i Player, as he talks about the difficulties he faced before making this movie, being pigeon holed a a black male screen writer etc. Cool interview from a cool and inspirational brother.

I hope this guy goes through the roof he deserves it.

Points Of View @ The British Library

If you get the chance please check out this exhibition at The British Library. It is called Points Of View, and is about the 19th century in photographs, as well as the history of the camera, with models and images of the very first cameras. Also photos of various people, cultures, and places taken on these early forms of cameras at a time when the world was completely different, but was fortunately captured on film. It is really worth checking out.

Another "Supergroup" has just arrived on the music scene, (well they formed back in 2005 but their debut album is out this November 2009) and from what I have heard and seen from them so far, I like. Them Crooked Vultures consists of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) drums and vocals, Josh Homme (Queens Of The stone Age) Guitar and vocals and John paul Jones (led zeppellin) on bass, keyboard, piano, slide guitar mandolin and vocals, wow!

I'm going to have to check out this Documentary. Bill Withers really is a musical genius, and a great song writer. Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall is an amazing album, "Grandmas Hands" and "I Can't Write Left Handed" are two of my favorites from this album.

Is The Documentary "Still Bill" that bad? going to see where i can buy it online and to see for myself. (The Guy looks great for 70)

A Japanese Glasses manufacturer has created special eyewear for gamers who game hard and suffer from dry eyes. Sensors in the glasses detect when the wearer has not blinked for
more than five seconds. The lenses of the glasses contain liquid chrystals which make the lens on one eye become opaque. Once the gamer/wearer blinks, the lens becomes clear again. They will set you back £263 pounds though......that's some expensive gaming. The Accountant.

I went to see the fantastic Mr Fox Last night, and it was indeed fantastic. I've never read the book and did not even see any trailers, it just looked interesting. The way it looked was amazing, and the voices really brought the characters to life. Loved Meryl Streep, Clooney was really good as mr fox, probably my favourite character, as was Michael Gambon as the wicked and bad minded farmer, what a great voice. Willem Dafoe as the rat is classic. It's definately worth seeing.

The 80's was a strange decade for me. 80's fashion was not that great, even though it has had a revival lately ( I am loving all the pointed shoulder detail on dresses etc at the moment though).

80's music Mmmmmm! I loved 80's pop, 80's soul, and i was heavily into regae in the 80's.

80's movies, while they seemed good at the time, many seem really dated to me now. They were just too glossy for me, and not enough grit. Even though there were a few classics in the 80's I hardly have any in my collecetion, but i do have quite a few from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 90's and the 2000's. Two movies that i really loved from the 80's were/are "Christine" by John Carpenter, which ahsa a great soundtrack, and "They Live" also by John Carpenter.

plus size models. Mark Fast show 2010

Ok, so today i am reading the newspaper and i see a photo of a model in a cool looking dress and think to myself she looks good, then below I read that designer Mark Fast has used some size 14 models in his 2010 catwalk show, which caused a row with his management team and caused one stylist to walk out. He used three "Plus Size" models, a size 12 (plus size?) a size 14 and a size 12-14. Now, I watched the show (see below) and i cannot see anything wrong with the models. It's great that he used a variety of models, and i really am tired of seeing stick insects in many of the fashion magazines and shows. There is nothing wrong with slim, and i do not see size 12 or 14 as too large to model clothes. but we need variety. Anyway the designs are great, and so are the models.

Michael Jackson 1958-2009

Just a few weeks ago me and my friends were getting down and having a great time at a Prince vs Michael night in west London. we are all big fans of them both, some more Prince and some more Michael. We had a great time, a good laugh, and the atmosphere was beautiful. We were all saying how we could not wait for the next Prince vs Michael night. there were no negative vibes, nobody wanting to "shank a mans", just people coming together and having a good time. Since that night i Have been playing a lot of Jacksons music, that night reminded me how many classic tunes Michael and the Jacksons did.

Friday morning I woke up with several text messages and voicemails on my phone. I read the messages and could not believe what i was reading. I turned on the news and still could not believe what i was hearing. Michael Jackson dead.

To me he really was The greatest entertainer. By Himself or with the Jacksons, the man was amazing Live, and on record.

It's hard to choose which tunes and videos to put here, he had too many good ones, so here are a few.

Island Records restores mojo

Mawga Rocka is a sensitive soul. So the national malaise of late has affected his ability to write. This is bad, because words put food on the lad’s little round table. Hence, Mawga Rocka has had to forego the rich sauces and refamiliarise himself with the pleasures of creating a vegetable stock from an onion, a carrot, an old potato, some old ginger and the all important bay leaf.

But Mawga Rocka’s got his mojo once more. Like many folk who live in Britain, he pays his TV licence fee, and expects to see something wonderful from time to time on the broadcasting institution that is the BBC. And this weekend, starting on June 5th, did not disappoint. It delved deep into the story of Island Records.

Now, there’s not a lot of time to explain, but you have to imagine that this is a record label that started out delivering Jamaican music such as Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff to the British, then decided to go rock, wherein it found the like of Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens and Free, not to mention Bad Company, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny and King Crimson. It was * the * label you wanted to be on if you were a serious artist keen to explore your creativity.

But that’s not all. Its founder, Chris Blackwell, then rediscovered his love of Jamaican music and brought us Burning Spear, Sly and Robbie, Eek-a-Mouse, Aswad, and of course, Bob Marley and the Wailers, and, ladies and gentlemen, Miss Grace Jones.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Island has done anything and everything from B52s to Beenie Man, PJ Harvey to Sugababes, Pulp to Boo Ya Tribe. It’s always been about mixing it up, and mixing up some pretty good acts, even within its more naff moments. Yeah, secretly, Mawga digs Mutya.

And of course, they nearly dropped U2 at album number two. October didn’t do so well, and seemed like the great Irish signings’ swan song. But Island kept faith with Bono, Edge et al. When some bad accounting pushed Island to the wall, U2 could have sunk it by demanding royalties that the label could not pay on time once the band hit pay dirt with War. That little act of faith meant that U2 went on to produce the Joshua Tree in 1987, and, well, if you were around at the time, you know how lucrative that little venture proved to be. Oh, and did we mention Frankie Goes To Hollywood?

So, as Island celebrates its 50th year, Mawga Rocka salutes Chris Blackwell’s little brainchild.

Two moments of the night’s watch: Sly and Robbie describe Chris Blackwell’s approach to record production. A slight misquote here, but Robbie essentially denies any contrived fusion in the sound, saying that for Chris “it haffe soun’ wicked, mek you jig up you shoulder”.

And as a video treat, there’s nothing for it but to say ladies and gentlemen, Miss Grace Jones.

Grover, get your groove on

The Mawga Rocka apologises for an absence from this esteemed site. He’d like to say that he was busy working hard to support a wife and two kids, not to mention a large mastiff called Clyde and a collie-setter mix named Marva, recently purchased for the children.

However, that would be a lie. The Mawga Rocka has no dogs, no wife, no children. Not even a fish to support has he.

But he does have childhood memories, like the time when he didn’t know who that odd guy was who used to appear on Sesame Street, the skinny guy with dark glasses, a funky tune and an odd swaying movement. He was Grover’s friend. Mawga Rocka recalls seeing the self same guy on another television programme, and called out to his older brother, “Look, it’s that Stevie man from Sesame Street”. Mawga Rocka’s brother soon set him straight. That Stevie man was actually Stevie Wonder, one of the biggest stars around, and a figure who went on to become Mawga Rocka’s favourites.

So, to share a couple of moments with you all to enjoy, while imagining the Mawga Rocka as a five-year-old, all big teeth, picky hair and polyester t-shirt, transfixed to the television as that “Stevie man” showed us what childhood education was all about.

Like the rest of the Organik Rocka crew i am a lover of movies............good movies. I recently watched Curse Of The Golden Flower, Again! and I cannot believe how visually stunning this movie is, as are a lot of Movies from China and Asia,(check out the movie "In The mood For Love" by Wong Kar-wai) especially in this Genre. Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, The Banquet. The Wardrobe,the cinamatography, and of course the choreography. Yuen Wo Ping is the master at this. Just got in, and was dying to hear some music, so i put on Rated R by Queens Of The Stone Age, what an album, i love this album, then i put onWhite Pony by The Deftones, ok i just bought this album recently, Special K has been telling me about The Deftones for ages and it's only now, years later that i am bussin it hard. After these two albums, i had to listen to something a bit more chilled, so it had to be Blue Train by John Coltrane.

The Mawga Rocka is not ashamed to admit that he was born at a time before Watergate, when people still bought large black and white televisions, before the break up of the Beatles. He even briefly shared time in the land of the living with Dr Martin Luther King and Robert F Kennedy. Only a little bit, mind you.

So, back in the 1970s, when the small buck-toothed boy was taken to various cinemas in Kingston, Jamaica, to see various productions of Live and Let Die, King Kong, Jaws and Star Wars, he would often be treated to trailers promising fist fights, blazing guns and sassy sistas with big hoop earrings and funky afros. So snake fists took on tiger paws, Coffy and Cleopatra Jones took on the man, there was Hell Up In Harlem, and Shaft getting’ down in Africa.

So, it’s a joy to discover that writer, actor and martial arts black belt Michael Jai White has rekindled an interest in those frenetic trailers, with the promise of Black Dynamite, a deadpan, spot on parody mash up of the very best of Fred Williamson, Pam Grier, Jim Kelly and Richard Roundtree. Mawga Rocka loves the trailer, and hopes that the film, directed by Scott Sanders, is as good as the trailer, and gets some UK distribution.

Listening to the radio several weeks ago, this particular pair of ears, flat out in bed and drifting toward the fabled land of nod heard this particular gem. It was one of those moments where the sandman is sitting at the head of your bed steering you toward his sinister not-waking-not-dead state that feels oh so good to you and is terribly satisfying for him, but suddenly, you hear something on the radio and you go “Whoa Mr Sandman! Draw your brakes brother. What’s that??!”

It was JME. Juju Man. What can you say about it? Young second gen Nigerian yootman shies away from mimicking America and pseudoing patois while embracing both, throwing in both Nigeria and wit, et voila: a tiny masterpiece!

Now, the music on its own stands the test. But it’s made even better by some wag’s (no, not WAG a la Colleen and her ilk) mash up with images of Star Wars and (I believe) w the Justice League, and I think you’ve got a winner.

Mr Tweak gave it 7 out of 10.His reason being 'it is Bond, they spent so much money you have to like it'. What the hell is he on about?

What the? Just tried to find some classic Prince videos on youtube to add to our blog, but was thwarted - either no videos & if you do find videos, there is no sound. I know the sky is falling & everything (with more important things going on
in the world)but damn!!

Why is he blocking his videos? The youth could do with hearing/watching classic pop music.
He surely can't moan about the sorry state of current pop music,when by his actions, he is preventing those young up & coming creatives (who would be inspired by his sounds)from getting access - remember the youth do not buy music any more & youtube is their free video jukebox.

Also, what about his fans?(those that are left)who supported him through out the years - we deserve better!!

Come on Prince - as Dizzy Rascal says - Fix Up look sharp!!
